Restaurant Zén

The Swede sensation called Frantzén comes to Singapore

F&B: There is only one word to describe Restaurant Zén and it is sensational.

Not only because it is the Singapore outpost of three Michelin-starred Frantzén in Stockholm; nor for its stylish Ikea meets Armani/Casa style of Nordic decor; or its platoon of expert servers and chefs; but also  because its fixed menu is now Singapore’s most expensive at S$450. 

That, however, guarantees an experience that comes closest to dining in a three-star restaurant in England or France or, in this case, Sweden’s Frantzén itself. 

Restaurant Zén is open for dinner only and the “meal’’ starts with various nibbles in the ground floor lounge of the building that used to house Restaurant Andre. 

Then, before moving up one floor to your table proper, you are invited to view a tray of exotic ingredients, including live blue lobsters, sea urchin, scallop, caviar and mushroom – while slurping a small cup of foamy veloute.

On the second floor, what seems like a never-ending series of starters is served – from tartare of red deer and pork broth chawanmushi, to Hokkaido scallop smothered in white truffle and the aforementioned lobster, now less frisky after being cooked in butter. 

The main course is Japanese wagyu accompanied by Zén’s special-mix salt and pepper, if so desired.

Following that is the signature French toast, which is not a sweet treat but the second main course that is washed down with delicious oxtail consommé and a generous helping of truffle.   

To refresh your mouth in between bites, three drink pairings are available: pure juice at S$125, a mixed pairing at S$175, and the full wine and sake accompaniment at S$250. 

You can’t say you’re shocked by the prices because you know what the menu costs. These are also no ordinary juices – they’re not only exotic (yellow beetroot with white tea, for example) but perfectly complement  the food. 

And unlike some restaurants where the wines selected for the pairing often taste like something bought from a convenience store, Restaurant Zén is way classier. There’s even a fruit beer with one of the desserts on the chillax third floor. 

You can’t get more zen than that. 

Carpark: Bukit Pasoh has extremely affordable kerbside parking but as with all good things, there’s a catch – you’re more likely to snag a Hello Kitty food holder from McDonald’s than a parking space at dinner time. Not to worry, the restaurant offers valet parking, and so does the Dorsett hotel down the road. It will cost more but it’s nothing compared with the restaurant bill.
