IconSiam And Then Some

Don’t worry, Bangkok’s smog won’t affect your tastebuds at some of the latest makan places in the Thai capital

March 2019

The pyramids are enormous. The Forbidden City is huge. But when it comes to IconSiam, massive doesn’t even come close.

IconSiam on the banks of the Chao Phraya River is Bangkok’s latest mega-mall.

Bigger than Punggol but with a slightly less sanitary waterway, the

11-storey development stands opposite the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Opened in November 2018, it is so big and glitzy that it has not one or two “food courts’’ but seven so-called Dining Areas.

Don’t worry if you’re not feeling peckish, how about a Rolls-Royce? There are also luxury car showrooms on the upper floors with brands such as Porsche and Maserati.

And oh, a specially built rail line will connect IconSiam to the BTS Skytrain network next year. For now, a shuttle boat from Saphan Taksin pier or a shuttle bus from Krung Thonburi BTS station takes you there. Both are free.

Not all the food outlets at this spanking new mall are open yet. But there are already numerous restaurants and eateries spread out all over, including one very interesting floating market called Sook Siam on the ground floor.

Here, hawker food from across Thailand is sold at colourful little stalls.

If you prefer some service, try Thipsamai upstairs. This is a branch of that famous pad thai shop in the old part of Bangkok.

Comfortable and convenient, it has various versions of the stir-fried rice noodle but without the crowds, the queues, and sadly, the taste.

Explosive eats
More pleasing to the palate is Khua Kling Pak Sod. This Southern Thai restaurant has four branches with the most convenient near Asoke and in Thonglor.

A signature dish is Khua Kling Moo Sab, a stir-fried spicy Southern Thai-style dry Khua Kling curry with minced pork. Eat it and you will experience the higher end of the Scoville scale.

You may also experience a copious discharge of mucus and tears but the level of embarrassment is immeasurable.

But the nicest thing about this chain is how civilised it is. The Prasarnmit branch near Asoke, for example, has a charming dining room and Khun Tar, the hospitable lady manager gives excellent recommendations – in perfect English.

Salad smorgasbord
If you still hanker for street food, however, Som Tam Jay So near the Chong Nongsi BTS station is a superlative choice.

Som tam is green papaya salad with over 100 variations, and most are sour enough to strip away tooth enamel with the first mouthful.

But Som Tam Jay So’s are so beautifully balanced you could imagine they were tossed in some Thai aristocrat’s palace. Except this is a shack by a busy road, shared with a ginormous charcoal pit and a smaller, nondescript stall.

Order an array of som tam with corn or catfish or sweet strawberries or insanely scrumptious lotus stems, to go with golden grilled chicken wings, and – from that apparently nondescript stall – pickled mussels, tender BBQ pork jowl and the most delicious liver in a dressing of fish sauce and spring onion.

Super sausage
Now that you’re too full to eat anything else, stock up on lap cheong from a Chinatown shop whose customers include Michelin-starred farang chefs.

On a side street in Yaowarat, where lap cheong and bak hu (pork floss) have been made in the dingy backroom for generations, choose from No 1 (less fatty), No 2 (fattier) and No 3 (fattiest).

Surprisingly, you would think greasy No 3 would be tastiest and therefore cost the most but it’s actually No 1 that is the priciest.  But the top option is still a steal at just 300 baht a kg.

Resilient and succulent with a sweet, clean flavour, it is fantastic  in claypot rice.

The light and fragrant bak hu is even more delicious, with a mild crunch that contrasts wonderfully when eaten with soft bread.

When there’s so much good food in BKK, who worries about a bit of pollution?
