Crossover Energy
It’s easy to get charged up by the terrific styling and range of the Hyundai Kona Electric
Now that there are no more Yellow Pages, you can’t let your fingers do the walking. But with the Hyundai Kona Electric, you can let your fingers do the braking.
The Kona Electric is the pure electric version of that stylish subcompact five-door SUV.
Compared to the petrol-engined Kona, the electric crossover has a distinctively different front end and dashboard.
But its stunning design is not the only thing that will get anyone all charged up; the Kona Electric’s range is equally spectacular.
Because while pet dogs get separation anxiety, most EV owners experience range anxiety because eco-friendly models usually have only a sub-300 km range on a single charge.
The Kona Electric, on the other hand, is the Kenyan marathoner among long-distance athletes.
With a higher-capacity battery, it can travel up to 482 km on a single charge.
Powertrain
The Hyundai Kona Electric comes with two battery choices for two variants – the Kona Electric (Standard) and the Kona Electric (Long Range).
The standard range Kona Electric’s 39.2 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery produces 136 hp and 395 Nm, for zero to 100 kmh acceleration in 9.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 155 kmh. A full charge taking six hours and 10 minutes gets it a maximum range of 312 km.
On the other hand, the Kona Electric (Long Range) has a higher capacity 64 kWh battery that produces the same torque of 395 Nm but higher power of 204 hp.
This allows it to zip from zero to 100 in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 167 kmh. The acceleration is great, and the elasticity amazing.
It has to be plugged in for nine hours 35 minutes but a fast charge is, well, faster at 54 minutes and good for an 80 per cent state of charge.
But the clincher is the range – the Kona Electric (Long Range) can travel up to 482 km on a single charge.
Features
At 4,180 mm long and 1,555 mm high with a 2,600 mm wheelbase, the Kona Electric cabin is nonetheless spacious. Rear legroom is good but three average-sized adults may be a little snug across.
Up front, the faux metallic finish of the buttons and lower centre console gives a refreshing space age vibe.
The latter looks uncluttered because the shift-by-wire system drops the gear lever for a neat set of P, R, N and D buttons.
There is a seven-inch instrument cluster, a seven-inch centre display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless inductive charging for mobile phones, and ventilated front electric seats.
And as with your usual Hyundai model, the Kona Electric has class-leading safety equipment. Blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning systems are also standard.
Drive
Because the seating position is raised, all-round visibility is good. So is ride comfort.
The Hyundai Kona Electric’s suspension set-up comprises front MacPherson struts and more sophisticated rear multi-links. They work together to let the Kona absorb most bumps in a very European-like mannner. Both the physical and aural impact of road irregularities are dulled, even with low-profile 17-inch tyres.
And thanks to the accurate steering and fairly firm suspension, the handling is also sufficiently composed.
But more than just entertaining you with the abundant torque or a fast corner, the Kona Electric’s unique powertrain allows finer control using the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
Pulling the left paddle engages up to three levels of regenerative braking. It has the same effect as stepping on the brakes but using your fingers instead. Pulling the right paddle reverses it.
Get used to this and the Kona Electric’s phenomenal oomph can be fully exploited for spirited driving; your right foot can stay on the accelerator without having to shift over to the brake pedal. It is that fun to drive.
You can even bring the car to a complete stop by not releasing the left paddle.
And when the Kona Electric is stationary after doing this, there’s no Uncle Joe Biden or no creep. If you had used your foot to hit the brakes and stopped, there would be the usual acceleration creep upon releasing the brake pedal.
But even better than the driving dynamics is that playing with the shift paddles enhances energy recuperation and may increase the range by more than 10 per cent.
Price
There is a catch to all these wonderful features, of course; this green car requires more of the green stuff.
The Hyundai Kona Electric is banded A1 with a maximum S$20,000 VES rebate, and there are three variants. The Kona Electric starts at S$146,999, the Kona Electric (Long Range) is S$166,999, and the top-of-the-line Kona Electric Sunroof (Long Range) is S$172,999.
Compared with the other Hyundai all-electric model, the Ioniq five-door hatchback with only one output of 118 hp and 295 Nm, the entry-level Kona Electric costs S$17,000 more, while the Long Range is S$37,000.
With greater power comes greater prices.
